Visual Arts

The Hathaway Brown Visual Arts Department is committed to promoting creative and critical thinking in children. It is essential that young people learn how to look at their world and develop the ability to describe, analyze, and interpret what they see. These observational and analytic skills give students the visual literacy necessary to make informed responses to works of art and their environment. The visual arts curriculum also provides important opportunities for personal expression through artistic media.

• The purpose of a visual arts project is to break down mental barriers and to stretch the students' minds in new ways. The skills and objectives in each of the sequential and cumulative assignments feed into one another, reinforcing what is already learned while the students acquire new information as they progress. These given problems are solved through artistic means, but the knowledge acquired can be applied to any area of the curriculum and to life.

• The introduction of Art History helps students understand that art is a visual record of the past, an expression of the present and an indication of the future.

Incorporating technology into the visual arts curriculum provides opportunity for collaboration with children around the world. Visual imagery makes available a universally understood language by which our youngest global citizens can share their ideas and their culture while discovering their differences and their similarities.
