The faculty do more than provide encouragement and set high expectations for HB students; they've invented academic designs that enable students to challenge themselves to excel, explore and discover. M.A., Kent State University
Bill Adler began teaching at HB in 2007. He teaches Algebra 2 Honors, Precalculus BC Honors, AP Calculus BC, and Multivariable Calculus Honors.
During the 2017-2019 academic years, he served as the Mathematics Department Chair. He also served as a mentor for new teachers. Bill has experience teaching at both private and public schools and at the university level. His teaching assignments include: Algebra, Algebra 2, Algebra 2 Honors, Algebra for Calculus, Linear Algebra Honors, College Algebra with Trigonometry, Calculus, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, Multivariable Calculus Honors, Precalculus AB Honors, Precalculus BC Honors, Calculus C Honors, Calculus 2 w/ Probability Honors, Geometry, Discrete Math w/ Calculus, and Integrated Math I and II.
Bill created and facilitated a Praxis II workshop at Bowling Green State University and Kent State University, which prepared future Math teachers to pass the Math licensure test for the State of Ohio.
Bill holds a B.S.Ed. in Integrated Mathematics and a M.A.T. in Mathematics for Secondary Teachers both from Kent State University. He is a member of the Ohio Council for Teachers of Mathematics and the Greater Cleveland Council for Teachers of Mathematics where he served as the East Side Director from 2009 to 2012.
Bill has received numerous awards for his teaching including the U.S. Presidential Scholars Distinguished Teacher Award in 2019 and 2014, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Teacher Tribute in 2019 and 2014, the Stanford University Teacher Tribute in 2017, and the Coca Cola Award for Most Influential Teacher 2015.
Additionally, he received a GE STAR Award from the GE Foundation’s program, Institute of International Education, which he used to purchase educational software for his students. In 2016, Bill and his fellow HB colleague, Kevin Purpura, received the Osborne Catalyst grant, which enabled their students to work collaboratively on a project combining mathematics and economics.
Holding a Third-Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, Bill is working on his Fourth Dan or master status. Aside from doing martial arts in his spare time, he also enjoys reading and traveling. Bill and his wife, Donna, reside in the Kent area with their two cats, Oscar and Harriet.
