M.A., University of Chicago
Laura Zappas has been teaching sixth grade English at Hathaway Brown School since 2003. Her love of teaching began while a student at the University of Denver where she taught recent Russian émigrés English and Russian to first year university students. While attending graduate school at the University of Chicago and aspiring to become a professor in comparative literature (she majored in English, French, and Russian as an undergrad), she realized her heart belonged out of the research library and in the classroom. She returned to Colorado to teach English at a girls' boarding school. When the school closed, she moved to Oregon and taught English, grades seven through nine, where she met her husband, who hailed from Pittsburgh. Deciding they should be closer to one of their families, they relocated to Cleveland. They have since grown to a family of five with a daughter in the class of 2023 and three-year old twins. While she misses the blue skies of her native state of Wyoming, she loves being a part of the Hathaway Brown community.
