Middle School trip to Costa Rica a benchmark for student travel abroad

Advisor presents sessions at two important teaching conferences

Hathaway Brown Middle School Spanish teacher Chela Crinnion spent Spring Break this year traveling to Costa Rica with a group of students who were able not only to enjoy the beautiful countryside, but to truly make a difference to the people who live there.

In addition to delivering numerous items donated to the Soccer Gear Drive for Costa Rican Kids, the HB students spent time working with, helping and getting to know people they had more in common with than they might have thought.

"The Costa Rica trip was amazing," Crinnion said. "The students really bonded and the impact of the service projects was profound on them. That was incredibly rewarding to witness."

Crinnion shared that good news with the attendees of the North East Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Language (NECTFL), held March 27 - 29 in New York City. She presented a session at the conference called "A Mascot & a Mission: A Head-to-Tail Make-Over of Middle School Travel Abroad."

Attendees of the session got a little taste of the HB Costa Rica trip: "With their stuffed monkey in tow, teenagers from Hathaway Brown School explore Costa Rica during spring break. Adventure learning and service learning are core elements of the intinerary, fostering leadership skills and personal growth. This session [conveys] the transferable elements of the trip, empowering faculty to design unique, meaningful travel experiences for their students."

Crinnion presented a similar session in August at a conference of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish & Portuguese (AATSP). An abstract of that presentation appears in the current issue of the association's journal, Hispania.
