Middle Science Department Chair Nicole Trombetta will participate in the 3rd Annual Food Stamp Challenge.
Beginning Friday, November 12, Trombetta will raise money for the West Side Ecumenical Ministry’s (WSEM) Food Centers and help raise awareness about the necessity of such programs.
“Over the past two years, I have discovered the limitations of a SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) diet,” Trombetta said.
“The affordable food tends to be high-carb and processed, or generally lacking in true nutritional value. They include white bread, white rice, white pasta, white potatoes and so on. Add to that no meals out, no free lunch at school, and no treats from the faculty room and you can see why they call this a challenge!”
Participants will commit to spending only $31.04 on food for the entire week, which is the 2010 weekly allotment for Ohioans who receive SNAP benefits. That averages out to $1.48 per meal per day.
As a participant, Trombetta has also set a goal of securing 20 pledges of $30 each, a total of $600. “Our overall goal is to raise $8,000 for WSEM Food Centers,” Trombetta said.
WSEM is Cuyahoga County's largest food distributor on the West Side, providing 750,000 meals a year and more than 13,000 supportive services to families and children.
If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to this cause or participate in the program, please contact Nicole Trombetta at firstname.lastname@example.org or mail a check (made payable to WSEM) to Nicole Trombetta, Hathaway Brown, 19600 North Park Boulevard, Shaker Heights, OH 44122.
You can also donate online with a credit card at www.wsem.org following this path: Ways to Give > Food Stamp Challenge. Everyone who donates will receive a reusable canvas grocery bag.
