Upper School students to spend a day immersed in studying the history and future of Cleveland

Hathaway Brown’s History Department is excited to announce that on February 10th, all Upper School students will spend the day immersed in the history and future of Cleveland.  They’ll hear from speakers and guest panelists at Hathaway Brown, followed by a trip out to the city to visit sites that shed light on Cleveland's future.

The Symposium will begin with a Keynote Address from Charles Michener, who will discuss Cleveland’s rich and vibrant history.  Charles Michener is an author and journalist. He is the former senior editor for cultural affairs at Newsweek and a former senior editor at The New Yorker

Paul Wellener will then present on the current state of the regional economy.  Mr. Wellener is a Cleveland-based Consulting Principal who focuses on Strategic Relationships at Deloitte.  He leads global client service teams for a variety of Northeast Ohio consumer and industrial products clients of the firm.  Mr. Wellener has a focus and passion for both the local community and the local manufacturing industry and has advised companies and organizations of all sizes during his career in Cleveland.

Koyen Shah, Director of HB’s Center for Girls’ and Women’s Leadership, will then moderate a Panel Discussion.  The panel includes the following HB alumnae: Helen W. France '71, Susan D. Dumas '84, Leah Yomtovian Roush '02 and Taylor Marcus '04.  These successful women will give the girls insights into what it means to live and work in 21st century Cleveland.

Following the Panel Discussion, the Upper School students will go on the road to take in firsthand some of the dynamic initiatives Cleveland has to offer at any one of the following locations:

Cleveland City Hall, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Metroparks, CanalWay Center, Cleveland Museum of Art, Cuyahoga County Government, The Group Plan Commission, University Circle Community Development, The West Side Market.
