Sydney Van Der Merwe named new Varsity Field Hockey coach
Hathaway Brown School is pleased to announce that Sydney Van Der Merwe has been named head coach of the varsity field hockey team.

Van Der Merwe takes the reins of the program from Amy Longley, who stepped down after 30 years with the Blazers, which included eight Final Four appearances and a state title.

Originally from South Africa, Van Der Merwe was most recently the assistant field hockey coach at Oberlin College. He has played the sport on four continents and has coached on many different levels. The length and breadth of his international experience on the field are sure to add to the continued success of the Blazer program.

Also leaving the field hockey coaching staff is varsity assistant coach Meghan Brennan, who will turn her full attention to the HB lacrosse program.

We're incredibly grateful to Coach Longley for influencing the lives of HB student athletes for nearly three decades. Her trademark school spirit and supportive style have been a great asset to HB athletics.

We enthusiastically welcome Coach Van Der Merwe and confidently look forward to another exciting season of Blazer field hockey.
