Congratulations to the Hathaway Brown Varsity Basketball team, which yesterday secured its fourth consecutive Ohio High School Athletic Association Division II State Championship title!
The Blazers put on a terrific show of teamwork and athleticism at the Jerome Schottenstein Center at The Ohio State University on March 17, when they competed with Millersburg's West Holmes High School Knights for the division crown. At the end of four quarters, the Blazers came out on top by a score of 53-41. It was an exciting and well-played game on both sides.
All of the student-athletes represented HB beautifully while the Blazer Nation fan section cheered them on. When she presented the team with the championship trophy, OHSAA Assistant Commissioner Roxanne Price applauded HB's tenacity and clear-eyed determination. "The Blazers don't hope to win," she said. "They expect to win."
The team is coached by Paul Barlow, who has guided HB to six back-to-back Final Four appearances and four consecutive state championships. He was named a 2012 Ohio Coach of the Year for girls' basketball by the Associated Press. Assistant coaches are Rob Koelling, Kevin Snyder, and Julie Lozon '07. Julie Brough serves as athletic trainer. The roster is made up of senior Kate Dolansky; juniors Vanessa Smith, Stephanie Solano, Stephanie Poland, Nia Marshall, and Colleen Lavelle; sophomores Beth Brzozowski, Karoline Schenosky, Alison Nordell, and Logan Paul; and freshman Alyzah Quereshy.
Special thanks to all the fans who traveled to Columbus to watch the game, or who followed the action from home and cheered along. Click here to view a slideshow of images from yesterday's State Championship or read about the matchup in The Plain Dealer at cleveland.com.
