January 24, 2011

All of you are probably familiar with the term, 'it takes a village' and never is this truer than in Middle School. We count on all of us to join forces to raise amazing young women who are eager to try new things, who see mistakes as opportunities, and who appreciate the adults in their lives, well, maybe not always.

I often remind parents that we get to see the best of their daughters. We get to see the child that is respectful, caring, enthusiastic, social, and hard working. I would not be totally honest if I said we see all of these everyday from each child, but we do see these traits lived out each day throughout the student body. I say this now because in these dreary days of winter when the "goodness of our child" seems to be as fleeting as the sun in Cleveland, we may need to be reminded of how tough it is to be a Middle Schooler and how pretty lucky we are to have such wonderful kids.

I know I speak for the faculty when I say we appreciate you working with us, trusting us to make good decisions with your daughters, and helping us bring out the best in them. You will have opportunities in the upcoming weeks to witness the energy and learning I see every day. We welcome you at Science Fair and book club to share in the experience.

Nancy Gladstone
Interim Director of Middle School

Planning Ahead

Spring Break is March 19-April 1.
Please be aware that school is in session
Monday, April 4.

A Necessary Reminder:

With the inclement weather, parking becomes more of an issue, especially in the Courtland Lot. I f you are coming for a meeting, or dropping or picking up your daughter, please do not park along the curbs in the Courtland lot. Not only it is a dangerous situation for students walking to the cars, but parents need to have room to circle the lot while dropping off and picking up their children and they are having difficulty getting through. Thank you for your help in maintaining a safe environment for our children.

Science & Engineering Fair

Hathaway Brown Middle School will celebrate the 30th annual Science & Engineering Fair on Wednesday, February 9, 2011. The fifth grade students will display their consumer testing projects, the sixth grade their Independent Science Projects, the seventh grade students their oceanography research projects, and the eighth grade students will demonstrate their motorized toy cars.

Students in the Science Research elective will also present the results of their research projects. The 5th grade Egg Drop will take place at 11:30am. Parents are invited to attend the egg drop and to tour the fair afterwards. Because judging will be taking place in the morning, parents are invited to visit the fair after 11:30am on Wednesday. Projects will remain up until 11:00 Thursday morning.
