When Henna Tzeng, Class of 2011, enrolled in Community Based Learning as a ninth grader, she found a unique way to combine her interest in service with her talent as a musician.  Henna chose to volunteer at The Music Settlement.  There she was matched with a music therapy class for students with autism.  Each week Henna would play various musical instruments, sing, and be a friend to these students.

Music therapy is an important tool for working with children with autism because it provides them with creative outlets for expression.  In this pressure-free environment, children also practice basic social skills and interactions as part of their lessons.  Henna was a constant presence in the lives of these young people, and over time the music therapist asked Henna to participate in private lessons with one of the girls from the class.  She was a mentor, instructor and friend to this girl for four years.  In recognition of her contributions, the Music Settlement named Henna Volunteer of the Year at an awards ceremony earlier this fall!

Congratulations Henna!
