SHAKER HEIGHTS -- Simply due to her love of helping others, a Hathaway Brown student collected more than 250 items for the children of the Providence House in Cleveland.
Warrensville Heights resident Sayble Bradley, a freshman at Hathaway Brown School in Shaker Heights, saw an article around Christmas concerning the Providence House, a crisis nursery offering emergency shelter and care to children who are at risk, and its lack of items that allow the organization to run its facility.
“I decided since they probably got everything on the list, I would surprise them with help for the facility,” Sayble said.
A little over a month ago, Sayble started a collection drive to gather items for the Providence House. She asked Hathaway Brown Upper School to donate baby products, asked her doctor’s office in Independence to give cleaning supplies, and she even went back to her elementary school, John Dewey in Warrensville Heights, and asked it to donate hair products. All of her resources happily agreed to participate.
Last week, more than 250 items Sayble collected were dropped off at Providence House, which sent a thank you note to her in return.
“They were really happy because they get donations, but not that large of an amount at one time and not one from a freshman in high school,” Sayble said.
Since Sayble’s mother, Melissa Mitchell, does work with foster and adopted children, Sayble has had several foster siblings over the years.
“I know it’s a struggle for some kids and they don’t have everything that I have. The Providence House helps kids not go into foster care,” Sayble said. “I know and have experience with foster kids and I wanted to help as much as I could.”
On a regular basis, Sayble volunteers at the Hospice of the Western Reserve and acts as a tutor to help her foster siblings with their homework.
“It’s just a nice feeling to know you helped someone out and that you can make their life a bit easier,” she said. “I really like to help people and I plan on being a doctor to help out more.”
