Northeast Ohio high school track and field athletes to compete in North Carolina meet

A final rematch between Woodridge and St. Vincent-St. Mary in the boys 4x800-meter relay highlights the area athletes headed to the New Balance Outdoor Nationals track and field meet today and Saturday in Greensboro, N.C.

Woodridge beat SVSM and set the all-time Ohio record (7:37.43) in the event at the Division II state meet June 3. The time is the fastest in the nation this year, according to milesplit.com. SVSM beat Woodridge at the district and regional meets.

Woodridge also is entered in the 4x1-mile relay. Several area state champs are entered, including Berea junior Donovan Robertson in the 110 hurdles and the college-distance 400 hurdles. Midpark is entered in the 4x400 and the 1,600 sprint medley relay, and Meteors seniors Kaila Barber and Jade Barber are in the 400 and 100 hurdles, respectively. Bay senior Bridget Doughty is entered in both hurdles.

Other area girls entrants include Highland's Natalie Zidd (800), Solon's Paige Yeager and Nordonia's Taylor McDonald (400 hurdles), Medina's Alexandra Wasik (pole vault) and Stow's 4x100 relay.

Among the local boys entered are SVSM's Jacob Swords (800), Cleveland Heights' 4x100, Medina's 4x1-mile, Stow's 4x110 hurdles, Cuyahoga Falls' Elliott Tedquist (pole vault), Brunswick's Jesse Braun (shot put and discus), Midpark's Conner Neu (discus) and Madison's Quentin Cieslinski (decathlon).

Area athletes honored: Six local seniors are 2011 Ohio High School Athletic Association Scholar/Athlete Scholarship recipients and will be honored today at a banquet in Columbus.

The honorees are Perry's Abigail Clifford (cross country, track), Nordonia's Salvatore Del Giudice (cross country, track), Revere's Katie Kimberly (soccer, swimming, track) and Ryan Wonders (basketball, baseball), Hathaway Brown's Sydney Kirby (field hockey, golf) and Kenston's Tamara Surtees (cross country, track).

Winners were selected based on a point system that rewards students for grade-point averages, ACT or SAT scores, varsity letters earned, individual and team athletic honors and an essay. Recipients of athletic scholarships are not eligible.
