Students bring home awards in the classics, art and science: Shaker Traces

SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio – The diligence Shaker Heights High School students have shown in studying classical languages has earned national recognition.

Based on the results of the fifth annual National Classical Etymology examination, the students earned 33 medals in recognition of their knowledge of Latin and Greek derivatives in English usage. The National Junior Classical League sponsored the test.

Hathaway Brown School students garner art and science awards:

Hathaway Brown students took home honors from the Cleveland Institute of Art's 35th annual Scholastic Art & Writing Exhibition. Emily Imka '15 won the program's top painting honor, the Sue Wall Award - and the Writing Poetry Award.

Other awards winners are Becca Lambright '15, Personal Essay/Memoir, Isabella Nilsson '16, Short Story, Kacey Gill '16, Critical Essay, and Lauren Kahn '15, Printmaking.

Another HB student, Emily Spencer '15, became one of only 40 high school students across the nation who was named a finalist in the Society for Science and the Public Intel Science Talent Search competition. Earlier this month, both she and Emily Amjad '15 were designated Intel STS semi-finalists.

Landmark Commission releases details of its third annual Preservation Month Photo Contest:

From Feb. 1 through March 31, the city's Landmark Commission is hoping to receive a record number of entries in its third annual Preservation Month Photo Contest. In asking for photos that "capture what you love about Shaker Heights," Ann Klavora, the city's Principal Planner, said the commission is looking for "striking images" about what "makes the city special and beautiful to you."

Submissions will be accepted online through March 31, and winners will be announced May 1, the start of National Preservation Month. One or more winners will be selected from among the following categories:

  • Architecture/building
  • Landscape/nature
  • Community (event, street/sidewalk scenes, etc.)

Shaker Historical Society to feature rarely seen textiles:

"Out of the Closet" Rarely Seen Textiles from Our Collection," will be the focus of a new exhibit at the Shaker Historical Society, 16730 South Park Blvd. The show runs from Feb. 3 through April 26.

The exhibit was brought to fruition based on intern Kate Connors' efforts last summer to catalogue the Society's entire textile collection.

"Literary Libations" will be on tap next month at the Shaker Heights Public Library:

Dave Greene, Dan Mizener, Clint O'Connor and Paul Qua will serve as guest bartenders on Friday, Feb. 6, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. when Friends of the Shaker Library sponsors its second "Literary Libations" at the Main Library, 16500 Van Aken Blvd. This year's benefit will feature the book, "Tequila Mockingbird: Cocktails with a Literary Twist," by Tim Federle.

"The State of the Schools" presentation set for Feb. 10th:

Dr. Gregory Hutchings, Jr., Superintendent of Shaker Heights City School District, will deliver the "State of the Schools" presentation on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 6 p.m., in the large auditorium of Shaker Heights High School, 15911 Aldersyde Road. The event is open to parents, students, staff members and the general public.
