Each of these exuberant young women has her own interests. That’s why across divisions, HB offers a wealth of opportunities for each student to find her own special niche. The school’s club scene has something for everyone.
BCA is a Middle and Upper School affinity group for African American/Black, Biracial, and students of the African Diaspora. Members meet to discuss topics relevant to their identity and look for ways to grow personally and to connect with the wider HB community.
The Blazing Barracudas are an institution owned, USA Swimming swim club, founded in 2018. The mission of the Blazing Barracudas is to nourish the mind, body, and spirit of each swimmer, every day, for the purpose of achieving his or her personal best as an individual, an athlete, a team member and a citizen.
HB's Business Club provides Upper School students with the necessary entrepreneurial and technical skills necessary to start a business.
Crossroads is a safe space for Christian girls at HB. Club members have Bible-based discussions and explore ways to maintain their faith in a school environment.
Developmental athletics are offered to Prime and Middle school students of all experience levels. Students participate in a wide variety of sports. Each program offers students the ability to work with skilled coaches to learn a new sport, enhance their skills, work as a team, and have fun!
HB is the first all-girls school in the U.S. to launch an esports team. The team competes against local schools and libraries with players ranging from novice to avid gamers.
Expressions is an after-school enrichment program that offers varied classes in arts, sports, drama, science, dance and creative movement.
The Fighting Unicorns is Hathaway Brown’s competitive Upper School robotics team. Annually, the team uses Computer Aided Design, programming in Java, as well as electronics and machining knowledge to create a robot that competes against schools across the country.
Hathaway Brown's signature Fellowships in Applied Studies present Food for Thought Fridays, a casual lunchtime lecture series open to all members of the HB community. Food for Thought allows students, faculty, parents, alumnae, and friends of the school to hear a wide array of viewpoints as dynamic presenters share their expertise in a variety of disciplines.
The French Club gives Upper School students a chance to explore the French language and improve beyond the classroom.
Third and fourth-grade club members learn about plants and the environment. In warm weather, the girls plant in the on-campus gardens and do routine watering and maintenance. In colder months, they work in the greenhouse. Collecting and weighing the Prime School’s snack compost is also an important aspect of this club.
This student-run foundation develops an early interest in philanthropy as it encourages and supports learning in connection with civic engagement. Members of the GROW Foundation raise money and award grants to organizations and institutions in the Greater Cleveland area and beyond. Annually, GROW grants $20,000 in grants to HB and other community service organizations supporting service-learning.
Members of Gold Key serve as Hathaway Brown ambassadors. Throughout the school year, they give open house tours, host prospective students, provide child care during events for parents, participate in student panel discussions and serve as advisor buddies to new students.
This student-led group educates the school community on environmental issues, executes action projects to promote environmental stewardship, and plans events.
Offered via the Upper School Fellowships in Business and Finance, the HathCaff is HB’s student-run café. Students in the Primary School run a weekly HathCaff express.
This ensemble is the youngest performance group on campus with third through sixth-grade members performing both in school and throughout the community. Honor Choir students delve deep into choral techniques and prepare more sophisticated music which they may not typically experience in their general Music class.
The Upper School Honor Council is a group of students and faculty who make recommendations to the Upper School Director regarding violations of the honor code. One representative per grade level serves on the Honor Council. The Honor Council representatives are ethical, trustworthy, and respected by their classmates for her integrity.
Middle School girls who identify as Jewish join the affinity group to dive deeper into the intersection of their identity as it presents in the media, across various ethnic groups, and in HB culture.
This fourth-grade club is for girls who want to challenge their math skills. Students work on higher-level, fourth through sixth-grade math problems. Throughout the year, there are five official exams where students’ math skills are put to the test. Math Olympiad runs from mid-September through March.
Mock Trial exposes students to the legal process and gives them experience in participating in the judicial system. Members also gain confidence and improve critical thinking skills as they prepare to compete in competitions.
Middle School girls who identify as Muslim are invited to join MSA to dive deeper into the intersection of their identity as it presents in the media, across various ethnic groups, and in HB culture.
The National Computer Science Honor Society recognizes students who have demonstrated interest, passion, and academic excellence in computer science, programming, and other computer science disciplines.
Open to all interested Middle School students for age-appropriate conversations to better understand topics of gender and inclusivity.
Real Conversations with Real People is an Upper School student-run forum. Student moderators engage faculty members in conversations on topics ranging from failure and mental health to family expectations and gender discrimination. These informal lunchtime conversations create a forum for building community and discussing topics that do not always arise in the classroom.
Open to fourth through eighth-grade girls who love to build and code! Girls of all experience levels build a robot using LEGOs to meet the specifications of the current theme, which changes every session. Girls work with a partner to code their robot to accomplish as many of the challenges as possible. This club runs in the fall and spring.
SWAG is a Middle and Upper School student group for girls passionate about issues of equality, equity, and social justice. Upper School girls in this group are trained to effectively facilitate conversations and activities focusing on issues of diversity, equity, and justice.
The Middle School Ski Club is a weekly opportunity for girls to stay active and enjoy the winter season. No prior skiing or snowboarding experience is required; students take lessons based on their ability. Ski Club starts in January and includes an overnight trip for sixth through eighth grade and a day trip for all students. See you on the slopes!
This Middle School affinity group is open to students who have ethnic heritage from countries in Southeast Asia, such as India, Nepal, Thailand, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Singapore, and the Philippines, to name a few. The group discusses ethnicity, academic expectation, and identity as an HB student.
Spectrum is a community for the LGBTQ+ students and allies at HB. Students meet to discuss and better understand topics of gender and inclusivity in an age-appropriate way.
Hathaway Brown's Speech & Debate team meets regularly during debate season to practice their approaches and hone their skills in preparation of several regional and interstate tournaments. Girls compete in a variety of disciplines, including Lincoln-Douglas Debate and Congressional Debate.
SALT is an Upper School student-athlete group for leadership training, creating relationships between athletic teams, and building a network between student-athletes and the Athletic Department.
The Middle School Student Council sponsors schoolwide projects and activities to promote school spirit, build fellowship, and provide service-learning opportunities that impact the greater Hathaway Brown community, as well as communities on the local, national, and international levels.
Upper School Student Senate members focus on community building, school events, and leadership development. The Senate president and four co-presidents are elected by the student body and faculty. The Senate actively tends to the culture in the Upper School, fostering a positive, inclusive community. Senate members also lead class meetings and organize class projects and activities.
This Upper School dance club is devoted to educating, elevating, and illuminating the art form of dance. Formal dance training is not required to participate, a commitment to the arts as well as a love of dance is sufficient.
This club is a community for Upper School musicians and vocalists who are committed to servicing the community through music and to raise funds for underprivileged music students at other local schools.
Coding is the team sport for future tech leaders and innovators! Students in grades first through third grade design real-world science and technology solutions to collaborative problem-solving challenges for Dash robots. Teams develop critical thinking and creativity skills, learn about issues facing the world around them, and build meaningful relationships with their peers.
