Upper School (9-12)

In Upper School, students connect with each other in a vibrant and supportive atmosphere. They’re empowered to meet their full academic potential through a wide range of challenging courses, interdisciplinary projects, and Fellowships in Applied Studies, which connect classroom learning to the real world.

Rachel Lintgen

Director of Upper School

A passionate advocate for school communities built on purpose, kindness, curiosity, and joy, Rachel is dedicated to creating spaces where every student feels supported and inspired to thrive. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Amherst College and a Master’s in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. With 18 years of teaching experience in both public and independent schools, including Holton-Arms (MD) and Germantown Academy (PA), Rachel has dedicated her career to fostering meaningful learning experiences for students.

Rachel embraces the richness and energy of the Upper School. You might find her teaching her English class, chatting with students who stop by for a piece of candy in her office, observing faculty in action in the classroom, or cheering on Blazer athletes after school. When Rachel isn’t at HB, you can find her working in her garden, walking the neighborhoods of Shaker Heights, or watching her beloved Philly teams with her husband and kids.

A Day in the Life

Arrive at School

Students are greeted with warm welcomes from Dean of Students Ms. Calabrese and Upper School Director Ms. Lintgen as they arrive on campus. On the way to Mentor Group or Morning Meeting, many swing by the student-run Hath Caff—part of our Business & Finance Fellowship—for a morning coffee and a boost of Blazer energy!

Mentor Time

9th and 10th graders team up with their 11th and 12th grade mentor buddies to chat about course options for next year and swap advice on which clubs to check out—perfect timing, right before the club fair!

English

Guided by Emily Style’s concept of “mirrors and windows,” the curriculum includes diverse voices that reflect students’ identities and expand their understanding of others. Vibrant class discussions build confident voices, and our thoughtful writing curriculum celebrates each girl’s unique voice.

Morning Break

Have a quick catch-up with friends, grab a coffee or tea, and enjoy a tasty continental breakfast (wholesome granola, fruit, yogurt, bagels).

Math

Math at HB is hands-on and collaborative. Students develop logical thinking and quantitative reasoning skills to become confident problem-solvers and creative thinkers in the classroom and beyond.

Lab Period

This is ideal flex time in the schedule. Students may attend an extended math or science class for hands-on lab work or use the time to hang out with friends, visit Math Lab for extra help, work independently in the art studio, or meet one-on-one with a teacher.

World Language

Students can work and volunteer in all three divisions. Athletics, ITC, and our before/after care programs are all spaces where HB students contribute to the school community. Today, in Señora Herrera’s post-AP Spanish Honors class, students dive into the rich literary canons of Spain and Latin America.

Arts

Dive into Dance, Ceramics & Sculpture, or Theater! HB students have so many ways to explore their creative sides. Dance (with Jenny Burnett) builds a strong ballet and modern foundation and promotes community engagement. Theater covers both onstage and behind-the-scenes skills. In Ceramics & Sculpture, Ms. Swearingen guides students through 3D creativity using pottery wheels and kilns. These are just a few examples of our many diverse offerings!

X Period

So many exciting options, all in one block! One student might head to Mr. Cuini’s Global Scholars class to explore U.S. foreign policy, while another checks in with Ms. McMillan about her Sustainability Fellowship project. Nearby, a musician rehearses for an upcoming orchestra performance, while someone else gets hands-on in the IDEA Lab with Ms. Jackson. This is Learning for Life in action.

Lunch

Grab lunch from the salad bar or hot line, catch a guest speaker, join a student-run club, or hang out with therapy dogs who come to visit on occasion—your choice!

Science

In Ms. Burtch’s Organic Chemistry class, students explore key reactions of organic molecules—perfect for future scientists and doctors. And that’s just one slice of our wide-ranging science program, where we’re building the foundational skills for women in STEM.

Foundations in Computer Science and AI

Today, Ms. Barkley and the class are learning to code and create their own video games.

Dismissal

Grab a snack from The Brown Bag and head to one of our many extracurricular offerings—sports, clubs, theater, dance.

Pep Rallies

Decked out in class colors and spirit wear, students compete in friendly competitions and celebrate their teams at fall, winter, and spring pep rallies.

IDEO

Latin for “for the purpose,” IDEO is a tradition that honors the seniors. Ninth through 11th grade students process through the halls before winter break and join the seniors in the gym for a special celebration. Seniors dress up, and parents and alumnae are welcome to attend the procession and ceremony.

Pool Jump

On their last day, seniors dash through the school and make a final splash—literally—by jumping into the pool at the Carol and John Butler Aquatic Center, singing the Alma Mater and saying goodbye to HB in style.

Carnival

HB’s largest and longest-running student fundraiser, first launched in 1929 by Latin teacher Grace Waymouth. Each year, the senior class selects a civic engagement partner to collaborate with and receives the event’s proceeds. Carnival weekend includes a 5K race, themed dance, raffle, games, and more—bringing the whole community together.
