Osborne Fellowships in Writing

The William McKinley and Jessie M. Osborne Fellowships in Writing help girls amplify their voices. Classes, workshops, discussion forums, and visiting writer residencies are all offered in the Fellowship to help students discover and develop their writing.

The program serves the entire Upper School and helps students with writing at any stage of the writing process ─ from brainstorming topics to final revisions. The Fellowship Director is available to discuss papers for any course or subject.

Girls interested in creative writing utilize the writing program for editing assistance and submission to publications and contests. HB's creative writers are recognized nationally and regionally.

How to Join

Meet with the Fellowship Director to discuss interest, leadership roles in developing programs, clubs, or activities to support and validate experiences of everyone in the HB community, and the following ways to get involved:

HB in Retrospect

Students in the writing program produce HB’s online student newsletter and the annual arts and literature journal, Retrospect — an award-winning student magazine. Led by a team of student editors, Upper School girls create all the content and run every aspect of the vibrant student forum.

Visiting Writer Series

Throughout the year, professional writers spend time on campus speaking at assemblies, visiting classes, hosting lunch forms, and leading workshops.

Young Writers & Artists Festival

Open to all Upper School girls, this annual event brings the nation's most talented and successful writers to campus to lead full-day workshops in creative nonfiction, poetry, spoken word, songwriting, screenwriting, fiction, comics, playwriting, and more.
