The Catalyst is a student-created and student-led organization with a mission similar to Hathaway Brown's — to educate, inspire, and empower students to make their voices heard.

Founder and Director Jessica Chang ’21 started the independent civics publication for informed youth activism. "The world is in need of a new generation of leaders and activists to create change," she said.

Jessica collaborated with other Hathaway Brown students to grow The Catalyst from a group of HB students passionate about civics and youth representation to having more than 1,000 student readers and subscribers across Ohio and other states.

The Catalyst is partnering with the Matriots, a nonpartisan PAC, and the League of Women Voters in Ohio, a nonprofit that empowers and educates voters to hold a free online conference in celebration of the 100th anniversary of suffrage for women. The September 26 conference, 100 Years Later: Beyond the Vote, focuses on showing young women how to get involved with their community and use their voices.

The Catalyst is also raising money for the League of Women Voters of Ohio Education Fund to support voter registration drives.

This summer The Catalyst participated in a town hall about the digital divide hosted by Empowering Youth Exploring Justice. The group also led a series of civic engagement workshops for the Aspire Program of Hathaway Brown
