Head of School Blog: HB Celebrates Women

As we have for the last several years, Hathaway Brown is proud to mark the month of March, Women’s History Month, with a wide array of events and initiatives that honor the strength, accomplishments, and potential of girls and women in our community and across the globe. Faculty and students in all school divisions will offer coursework and projects that highlight the many great strides women have made in every arena throughout history, even as we’re inspired to reach ever loftier heights today.

With all of this in mind, I hope you’ll take some time this month to talk with your daughters about their goals and plans for their own lives, and have some conversations about the phenomenal women (and allies) they’re learning about who have changed the course of history. We’re abundantly proud of the fact that for more than 140 years, we’ve remained steadfast in our mission to educate and empower girls. In fact, Hathaway Brown is consistently ranked as the #1 girls’ school in the state, and among the best girls’ schools in the country. At HB, students grow up believing that they can do anything because at this girls’ school, they see other girls achieving their goals every day. (Watch our Girls Can Do Anything video!)

Hathaway Brown is a school for girls, and it's so much more. It’s a school for scientists and writers and artists and mathematicians and budding entrepreneurs. It’s a training ground for athletes and dancers and musicians and actresses. It’s a place where young people are empowered to ask questions, challenge conventions and explore opportunities. And everything we do is guided by our motto: Non Scholae Sed Vitae Discimus—We Learn Not for School, But for Life.

Help us honor Women’s History Month for the next 31 days. Tune in to our social media channels and follow the hashtag #HBCelebratesWomen, where we’ll be sharing content related to our own school history and shining a spotlight on the great work of girls and women around the world. You can find fresh material all month long on FacebookTwitterInstagramHBlogYouTube, and hb.edu. Please be sure to engage with us by sharing our posts and adding your own perspective to the conversation. You can always find HB celebrating girls and women—especially our own students and alumnae—on these channels, so we hope you’ll continue to interact with us online and follow our athletics teams, curricular initiatives, global programs, HB news, and more even after the month comes to a close.

In the meantime, mark your calendars for March 8, International Women’s Day. The 2020 theme is #EachForEqual, because, as organizers say, “An equal world is an enabled world. Individually, we're all responsible for our own thoughts and actions - all day, every day. We can actively choose to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women's achievements.” Of course, the HB community stands ready to embrace this call to action. So we’ll be hosting Sisterhood Sunday on our campus on March 8 from 1-3 p.m. This collaborative effort is brought to you by HB's Carnival Committee, Class of 2020, Student Athletic Leadership Team, and the Hathaway Brown Parent Association. Bring the whole family to enjoy this International Women's Day program with games, movement workshops, dancing, sports, interactive creativity stations, healthy snacks, and more. Parents and children of all ages are welcome to laugh and play together as we join forces to bring support and awareness to this year's Carnival charitable partner, Girls With Sole, an organization whose mission is closely aligned with HB’s in educating and empowering girls. You can register for the event here.

Thank you for your support of girls and women in your own family, in the HB community, and all over the world. Happy Women’s History Month!
