Beyond Academics

Authored by Head of School Dr. Fran Bisselle

Last summer, I read Madeleine L’Engle’s book, A Circle of Quiet - “We don’t hurt ourselves…..by drinking instant coffee or eating powdered eggs, but we do hurt ourselves when we try to take shortcuts to find out who we are, and what our place is in the universe.”

How do we help each student begin to find her place in the universe?  We begin by creating opportunities for empowerment, stretching their creativity, teaching them to listen, respect, and support each other, and developing an understanding of what authentic ethical leadership is. These lessons take time and no one does enough.

Beyond Academics is an HB resource written collaboratively by our faculty to explain the social and emotional development of girls K-12. We share this wisdom with you both as an e-book and in our parent coffees, conferences, and counseling corner moments to help build a strong partnership, and to help navigate these years together with grace, humility, and joy.

To truly engage with mind, heart, and soul, our children - and ourselves - need to feel safe, valued, and loved. This is at the core of the human experience. As a parent myself,  I know how safe, valued, and loved I want my girls to be and to feel so that they can try their best. Enjoy the e-book and thank you for being a part of our HB family.
