Job Title:           Director of Human Resources

Reports to:        Chief Finance and Operations Officer

FLSA Status:     Exempt


Hathaway Brown School (HB) has an opening for a full-time Director of Human Resources.  We are seeking an experienced candidate with outstanding people and technology skills to manage our human resources programs and to ensure initiatives are effective, efficient, and mission-driven. As a key member of our leadership team, the Director of Human Resources sets the tone for the employee experience and acts as a trusted advisor to our entire staff. Salary for this position will be competitive regionally for independent schools. 

The ideal candidate for this role should possess a high work ethic, excellent communication skills, knowledge of employment-related regulations and best practices in Human Resources. The successful candidate will prioritize our diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and have strong strategic thinking abilities, highly effective organizational skills, and excellent interpersonal skills. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Core HR Operations

  • In partnership with School leadership, establish and maintain effective Human Resource policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legal requirements and current best practices
  • Provide support to School leadership in confidential conversations regarding employment/personnel issues
  • Represent Hathaway Brown School positively to the community at large and promote the School as a top employer
  • Monitor key human resources initiatives and metrics for effectiveness and alignment with the strategic plan and the School’s DEI-B roadmap
  • Maintain an active presence and participate fully in campus life by attending School events whenever possible
  • Demonstrate discretion and decorum in communications and maintain confidentiality with unquestionable integrity
  • Pursue appropriate professional development to remain current on human capital trends and employment law 

Managing the Employee Lifecycle: Recruiting through Termination

  • Develop and implement a strategy for the recruitment and retention of a diverse and mission-appropriate workforce at Hathaway Brown School
  • Coordinate the hiring process for Hiring Teams: write and update job descriptions; post for open positions across a variety of job boards; assist Hiring Teams with recruiting, interviewing, and hiring qualified candidates
  • Implement effective onboarding and orientation programming for new hires, including background checks and verifying employee eligibility
  • Ensure compliance with mandatory and non-mandatory training and licensure requirements
  • Collaborate with supervisors to design appropriate departmental performance management protocols, and support supervisors as needed to ensure compliance with all federal and state regulations
  • Support the termination process by coordinating multi-departmental efforts and providing managers with expertise and support during conversations with employees
  • Act as the School’s EEO officer and escalate accommodation requests when necessary

Payroll & Benefits

  • Oversee payroll processing and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations
  • Develop and maintain appropriate relationships with all third parties related to Payroll processing, Insurance, Benefits, ODJFS, BWC, etc. to ensure high quality, prompt, and competitive services are provided to the School
  • Assist, where necessary, with assembling information and reporting for the School and Retirement Plan audits
  • Assist the Chief Finance and Operations Officer in the creation and management of the salary budget and maintain current benchmark data for salaries
  • Manage the School’s benefits program by negotiating benefits and contracts, hosting open enrollment, providing oversight of all benefits budgets, and making recommendations to School leadership regarding benefit changes


  • Demonstrated working knowledge of current regulations and best practices relating to wage and hour and benefits administration; knowledge of OSHA regulations is a plus
  • Ability to administer benefits programs, including those mandated by federal and state law
  • Experience supporting the human capital needs of an educational or non-profit institution is preferred
  • Ability to use technology to create efficiency and enhance communications and engagement.   Experience with Paylocity and Paycor payroll systems, Blackbaud, and various job posting vehicles is highly desirable
  • Demonstrated aptitude and accomplishment in creating and maintaining effective HR systems and processes throughout an organization
  • Detail-orientation with strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple time-sensitive projects simultaneously
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills with the ability to identify problems and implement or propose creative solutions while utilizing good judgment
  • Ability to remain professional under stress, with excellent conflict resolution and negotiation skills

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or related field required; SHRM-SCP or SPHR strongly preferred.
