SUMMARY

Hathaway Brown School seeks a full-time Secondary School Visual Arts Teacher. Responsibilities include a full-time teaching load requiring expertise and knowledge in teaching drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, digital and analog photography, and other visual arts media. Responsibilities may include yearbook production, including graphic design, and publication using a digital platform. Experience teaching Art History is a plus. This teacher will also be a mentor (adviser) to a group of approximately ten students, helping guide them through their high school academic experience. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach a full load of classes, including Studio Art Survey, a foundation introductory course to high school visual arts in various media, and other advanced art courses as needed, including ceramics, digital and analog photography, publication and design, and Art History.

  • Oversee production and design of the Upper School yearbook.

  • Be a Mentor (Adviser) to approximately ten students at one grade level, working with students and parents in an academic and personal advisory role, including helping students manage their academic lives, course selection, and parent conferences. 

  • Maintain the art studio as a well-organized and safe learning environment.

  • Help to manage a budget and order materials and supplies in a responsible and cost-efficient manner. 

  • Curate and display student art throughout the building.

  • Be an active member of the faculty, including serving on faculty committees, attending faculty meetings and in-service days, and being an active member of the Visual Arts Department. 

  • Use technology to support curriculum and administrative responsibilities. 

  • Continue to develop knowledge and skills through personal and professional growth. 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

  • A minimum of a  Bachelor’s of Art or Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Visual Arts or Arts Education

  • Experience teaching at the Upper School level

  • Practicing artist is considered an asset

  • A passion for teaching and learning 

  • The ability to develop and implement an effective and engaging curriculum; a highly competent teacher

  • High-level of familiarity and competence across cultures and multiple perspectives

  • Familiarity and competence in technology skills

  • Superb communication skills

  • A growth mindset, energy and initiative
