The Mathematics Department at Hathaway Brown School has a part-time opening for a Middle School mathematics instructor. The ideal candidate will be able to teach all levels of middle mathematics from beginning fifth grade math through honors geometry. Experience using educational technology, including computers, and computer algebra systems, is required. Contributions to other areas of school life as listed below. A successful Middle School mathematics teacher will:

  • Demonstrate a passion and expertise in the teaching of mathematics.

  • Be confident in the use of technology in the classroom to engage learners

  • Foster the well-being of students in the Middle School by both challenging and supporting them

    Responsibilities include:

  • Instructing mathematics classes as defined by the mathematics department chair

  • With other department members, coaching students on growing math potential

  • Chaperoning/supervisory duties approximately two times a year

  • Engagement in the life of the Middle School (presence at assemblies, events, as appropriate)

  • Advising a small group of students each year, includes conducting parent-teacher conferences and writing year-end narratives on student development

The Middle School mathematics teacher will be a team player who works in concert with:

  • Other mathematics teachers, technology, Center for Multicultural Affairs, school counselor

  • Grade level dean and team

  • Division directors and center directors

Education and/or Experience

The Middle School mathematics teacher will:

  • Hold a degree in mathematics or a related field, Bachelor minimum, Masters preferred

  • Be a highly competent teacher, with the ability to develop and implement an effective and engaging curriculum.

  • Possess a knowledge of adolescent development and effective classroom practice for the middle school classroom

  • Be a powerful student mentor and advocate, with the ability to build positive relationships with middle school students

  • Be a trusted and sought-after colleague, with the ability to draw people in for collaboration and problem solving

  • Have a high level of familiarity with and competence across cultures and multiple perspectives

  • Possess technology skills consistent with high-level functioning in a 21st-century workplace

  • Have superb communication skills

  • Demonstrate energy and initiative
