American Red Cross Swim Lesson Levels and Blazer Program Progression

The skills listed below are what is covered in each level and the requirements for moving into Swim Team Prep.

Participants must be potty trained and have ability to dress themselves with limited assistance.

Learn to Swim Level 1:

  • Alternating and simultaneous leg and arm actions on back
  • Alternating and simultaneous leg and arm actions on front
  • Back glide and recover to a vertical position
  • Blow bubbles for 3 seconds
  • Bobbing, 5 times
  • Combined arm and leg actions on back
  • Combined arm and leg actions on front
  • Enter water using a ramp, steps, or side
  • Exit water using ladder, steps, or side
  • Front glide and recover to a vertical position
  • Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
  • Roll from front to back and back to front
  • Treading water arm and hand actions

Learn to Swim - Level 2:

  • Back float for 15 seconds
  • Back glide and recover to a vertical position
  • Bobbing, 10 times
  • Combined arm and leg actions on front and back
  • Finning arm action on back
  • Front, jellyfish, and tuck floats for 10 seconds
  • Fully submerge and hold breath
  • Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
  • Roll from front to back and back to front
  • Rotary breathing
  • Step or jump from the side into shoulder-deep water and exit using ladder, steps
  • Tread water for 15 seconds

Learn to Swim - Level 3:

  • Back float for 1 minute
  • Bobbing while moving to safety
  • Flutter, scissor, breaststroke, and dolphin kick
  • Jump into deep water from the side, submerge, and return to the side
  • Push off in streamline, then kick
  • Rotary breathing
  • Sit dive and Kneeling dive
  • Survival float for 30 seconds
  • Swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards
  • Swim freestyle for 15 yards
  • Tread water for 1 minute

Swim Team Prep 1 Requirements: 

  • Ability to make it across the diving well without stopping

  • Comfort in the deep end within arms reach of  instructor

  • Treading water for 1 minute without the use of the wall

  • Rotary breathing in freestyle

  • Comfort with working on diving

  • Ability to change into a swimsuit 

Swim Team Prep 2 Requirements:

  • Ability to do multiple laps within the diving well

  • Knows how to do freestyle (with rotary breathing) and backstroke

  • General understanding of the Breaststroke

  • General understanding of the Dolphin Kick

  • Demonstrate an open turn and willing to work on flip turns 

  • The last week of class, all students will be tested to see if they can move up to Lake Erie Silver Dolphins (LESD) swim team. 

LESD White Group Requirements:

  • Comprehension of 25, 50, 75, 100 yard swimming terminology

  • General Concept of the Butterfly

  • Familiar with all 4 stroke kicks

  • Ability to demonstrate a streamline position 

  • Ability to complete 25 freestyle and 25 backstroke without stopping in a lane

  • Ability to perform a sit dive and a kneeling dive
