Hathaway Brown School is committed to excellence in girls' athletics as part of a larger commitment to excellence in girls' education. Through experiences in our athletic program, girls challenge themselves to attain relevant goals, and to take their talents to the highest level of personal performance possible.

As student-athletes, HB girls are dedicated and motivated role models who recognize the privilege of being a part of the Blazer Athletics tradition. Coaches are devoted to shaping good character and personal growth in their student athletes, not just athletic prowess, and to do their best to provide a quality team experience for everyone. Sportsmanship, teamwork and ethical behavior are the overarching values of the program, and at all times, athletes are expected to represent their School with integrity.

The mission of the Hathaway Brown Athletic Program ultimately is a reflection of the School motto, "We learn not just for school, but for life." We strive to be the best that we can be both in the context of and beyond sports. We accomplish this by conscientiously preparing to compete, staying in the moment during athletic competition, and dealing honestly with our results.

As an extensive program that touches multiple aspects of the HB community, the athletic program strives to create an intense pride and loyalty among its participants to serve the program, fostering a shared allegiance among HB community members. Win or lose, the School supports and appreciates the contributions our student-athletes and coaches make to the life of the School.

League Affiliations

Hathaway Brown School is a participating member of the Ohio High School Athletic Association. The Blazers are also members of the Independent School League, the Northeast Ohio Field Hockey League, Ohio Tennis Coaches Association, Northeast Ohio Independent School Girls Golf League, and the Ohio Schoolgirl Lacrosse Association. Our Middle School teams also compete within the Cleveland Council of Independent Schools.

Interscholastic Sports Opportunities

In the fall, our seventh- and eighth-grade students have opportunities to compete in cross country, field hockey, soccer, tennis, and volleyball. In the winter, we offer basketball and swimming. Spring sports include lacrosse, softball, and track and field. For our Upper School students, we offer the same sports as in Middle School with the addition of a golf program in the fall and an indoor track program in the winter. Nearly 70 percent of Hathaway Brown's students participate in one or more interscholastic sports at the Middle and Upper School levels.
