Volunteer Opportunities

Year-Round Committees

Through the many Hathaway Brown Parent Association volunteer opportunities, parents can further support their children while getting to know the Hathaway Brown School environment, activities, staff and other HB families. The HBPA encourages parents to participate in any way they can. A few hours of parents' time, effort and talents makes a difference.

There are volunteer opportunities throughout the year, from assisting with the coordination of fundraisers to helping at HB's School store, the Brown Bag . Please review the volunteer opportunities by clicking on the links below.

Fall/Winter Volunteer Committees

Legacy Day - September Event

  • Parent volunteers are need to prepare and serve lunch, set up and supervise an activity, and to provide overall support for student/faculty/staff groups. This is an important community building event to kick off the school year.

Homecoming and Fall Festival – September Event

  • Committee members assist with planning, set-up and running of Fall Family Festival, including baking for and running the bake sale.

School Photo Day – September Event

  • Committee members work 1-2 hour shifts on the two School photo days.
  • Committee members also assist with coordinating students on photo days in early September, as well as photo distribution in late fall and early winter.
Dads & Donuts – October Event
  • Committee members work 1-2 hour shifts on their choice of two Dads & Donuts days.
  • Committee members assist with this annual opportunity for dads to enjoy breakfast with their daughters at Hathaway Brown School.

Father/Daughter Square Dance (Primary School) – November Event

  • Committee members assist with this annual tradition for K-4 fathers and daughters. The School gym is transformed into a "Western Barn" for dancing, fun and frolic.

Spring Volunteer Committees

Appreciation Breakfast – March Event
  • Committee members assist with this opportunity to show appreciation to the wonderful Hathaway Brown School faculty and staff.
  • Committee members work on the planning committee, prepare food for the breakfast, staff a shift or solicit donations.

Early Childhood/Primary School Special Saturday – March Event

  • Committee members assist with creating, planning and running a special event where Early Childhood and Primary School girls invite a special adult or parent to share in several hours of fun. The specific theme and activity varies each year.
Moms & Muffins – April Event
  • Committee members work 1-2 hour shifts for the Early Childhood, Primary School or Middle School Moms & Muffins days.
  • Committee members assist with this annual opportunity for moms to enjoy breakfast with their daughters at HB.
Used Uniform/Dress Code Sale (Primary & Middle Schools) – Staff a 1-2 hour shift at one of the two sale days in late August and late May
  • Committee members assist with the coordination and collection of used uniforms throughout the academic year and staff the sales in August and May.
Prime Yearbook – Flexible hours throughout year with concentration of effort in Spring
  • Committee members assist with taking digital photographs at Primary School events throughout the year.
  • Committee members also assist with layout, word processing, and editing in May.

Legacy Day - May Event

  • Parent volunteers are needed to prepare and serve lunch, set up and supervise an activity, and to provide overall support for student/faculty/staff groups.  This event is a wonderful way to celebrate the end of the school year.

 Year-Round Volunteer Committees

These committees have flexible schedules throughout the year unless otherwise noted.    

Brown Bag – Flexible hours; hour shifts, weekly or monthly

  • Committee members assist in the Brown Bag gift shop operated solely by the Parent Association.
  • The Brown Bag is open every school day: before school, during Upper School lunch, and after school for - hour. (Training is provided.)

Parent Grade Representatives – Requires some preparatory work May - August

  • Three to five parents per grade level plan the back to school party, end of year party and parent party.
  • Committee members assist with creating the emergency calling tree, welcoming new families, facilitating communication, and other grade related responsibilities.

Admissions and New Family Welcome

  • Each division has an HBPA Parent Liaison who works closely with their respective admission's director to coordinate volunteers throughout the year.
  • Parent volunteers assist admission directors with various admission events, transitions between grades, and welcoming new families to Hathaway Brown School and the HB Parent Association.

Sports Parents (Upper School)

  • Each sports team may as for parent involvement for fundraising and support of various Upper School sports teams. A golf outing fundraiser is among the events.

PACT Representatives Two-year commitment & required monthly meeting

  • Committee members participate by communicating PACT activities with HBO administration and HBO parents at fall coffees.
  • Other responsibilities may include directory sales, program assistance, and creating the PACT newsletter.
Special Celebrations/Major Fundraisers
  • Committee members assist with celebrations such as HB's 130th and the Headmaster's Anniversaries and HBPA major fundraisers.

Performing Arts (Upper School)

  • Committee members assist with major drama and music productions.
  • Activities include the layout and copying of programs, organizing ticket sales and concessions, coordinating dinners for evening practices, baking, and other related requests.

Performing Arts (Middle School)

  • Committee members assist with specific needs for the Middle School chorus and instrumental performances throughout the year.

HBPA Communication/Website

  • Committee members assist with gathering and writing articles, photographing School events, coordinating mailings, and other related work.

Shopping Rewards

  • Committee members assist with publicizing and coordinating the various shopping rewards programs including Heinen's, General Mills, Box Tops, etc.
Special Skills/Talents
  • Committee members assist the HB community with their special talent or skill. A committee member indicates his or her area of expertise and how it could be shared with the School.

Speaker Programs

  • Committee members assist HB administration with scheduling speakers who would be of interest to HB parents and relevant to student curriculum.
