19th and 20th Century Western Art
This course focuses on exploring the work of specific artists and movements, while nurturing an understanding of the cultural and societal trends represented in the art. The course brings to life both the study of art and history, while concurrently developing in the student a basic understanding of the aesthetics of Western Art, knowledge of specific styles and the ability to apply this knowledge in analysis, comparison and criticism. The course is enhanced by weekly field trips to the Cleveland Museum of Art. Primarily, the course examines European and American Art, limited to age-appropriate level of inquiry, utilizing a core of knowledge based on crucial developments of artists and movements that best exemplify a given style, period or era.
