Center for Service Learning
The Center for Service Learning offers leadership opportunities for students who are passionate about engaging their classmates in community service opportunities in Greater Cleveland.
HB offers curricular and service learning opportunities at all grade levels. Coupling the hands-on community service with academic study, the program empowers students to act on real needs and to make a difference in their community.
Hathaway Brown School has a long tradition of community service. In fact, the Order of Willing Service, founded in 1901, reflected the early commitment of the School and its student body to community outreach. Service remained an integral component of School life throughout the twentieth century, and in 1999 the School embraced Service Learning.
What is Service Learning? The National Service Learning Clearinghouse defines service learning as an approach that "combines service objectives with learning objectives with the intent that the activity change both the recipient and the provider of the service. This is accomplished by combining service tasks with structured opportunities that link the task to self-reflection, self-discovery and the acquisition and comprehension of values, skills, and knowledge content."
Service Learning has had a transformative effect on community life at Hathaway Brown. Because Service Learning couples hands-on community service with academic study, students feel empowered to act on real needs and to make a difference in their community.
