In the Primary School, technology is used to transform learning and empower girls on their path to mastering the use of technology as an instrument for life-long learning. Students meet weekly with the Primary technology coordinator to receive direct instruction in the use of iPads and Windows laptops and software and apps. Technology is also taught through projects that are an integral part of the grade level curriculum.
They learn essential computer and other technology skills for research and communication, and they utilize the latest productivity software. This hands-on experience is designed to enhance reasoning and problem solving skills, and to promote the development of effective reading, writing and communication for the modern world.
Students have daily access to iPads and Windows laptops as well as other technologies, such as SMARTBoards, digital cameras, document cameras, and video production. Kindergarten through second grade share classroom sets of iPads, while third and fourth grade students are assigned a school iPad and wireless keyboard, to use throughout the day in all subject areas.
Students in third and fourth grades are introduced to keyboarding and word processing skills as a means of enhancing their work in other subject areas.
All Primary School girls participate in digital literacy and citizenship lessons to help them to think critically, behave safely, and participate responsibly in our digital world.
In this media-rich world students are exposed to images, topics and attitudes they may not understand, and they may not have an awareness of how they are influenced by the media. We include media literacy lessons during the Prime years to develop savvy consumers who can discuss, dissect and evaluate media messages.
Primary School girls use the Worldwide Communication Center for video conferencing with friends around the world and connecting with museums around the globe. Creating opportunities for global connections is a priority for multicultural understanding. Additionally using the Center’s equipment and green screen, they create their own video projects based on their classroom curriculum and a Broadcasting Choice class. These lessons provide a unique encounter with teachers and curriculum that is stimulating and personal.
