HB Vocal ArtsIn Hathaway Brown Upper School HB Vocal Arts Program, students experience, understand, and appreciate music and culture through the choral art. All students in grades 9-12 are invited to sing in HB Singers, a large, non-auditioned ensemble, and advanced singers audition to perform in the small a cappella ensemble Bravuras. Both ensembles perform excellent women’s choir repertoire in a variety of styles and genres including all classical periods, various world traditions, and modern genres like pop and vocal jazz. In addition to formal winter and spring concerts, a collaborative event with an excellent high school or collegiate choral program is programmed annually. HB Singers and Bravuras are performance ensembles but also music education courses in which daily attention is given to vocal technique, music literacy, ear training, blend and balance, and expression. Students are given ample solo and small ensemble opportunities and are encouraged to extend learning beyond the classroom through private study, honor choir and festival participation, and field trips to attend professional vocal music performances in the area. Performance tours out of state and internationally are also possible every other year.
