Our teachers have a lot to say. They're smart, funny and ready to share their thoughts. We've found a group of them willing to tell you what's on their minds. We hope you come here often. If you're moved to respond, please do. We'd love to read your comments. Just keep it responsible.

This will be a work in progress so check in regularly!

Here are our bloggers so far:

Sue Sadler is a veteran of the middle school classroom and now serves as Associate Head of School. Her perspective tends to take the long and forgiving view, since she’s spent a lot of time with middle schoolers and has been on both sides of almost every educational conversation with her own children. Sue’s views are strictly her own and do not necessarily represent institutional policy and, despite what she alludes to in her first entry, she does not get the entire summer off!

Jamie Morse has worn, and continues to wear, a variety of hats at Hathaway Brown. A long time member of the Visual Arts Department, he currently is chair of the department and teaches Studio Art, Photography and Art History. Jamie also was Dean of Students in the Upper School for thirteen years, and had two daughters go through HB, Julia ’99 and Betsy ’03, so he feels he knows as much about the lives of teenage girls as any man alive….which isn’t much! He also has been painting professionally for 35 years (jamiemorse.zoomshare.com), plays guitar and drums, loves to ride his motorcycle, likes gardening, and is a pretty good cook. Despite some hearing loss due to too much rock ‘n roll, Jamie considers himself a very good listener.

Terry Dubow is the Director of Communications and a Media Literacy teacher in the middle and upper schools. For five years, he ran the Osborne Writing Center and was once known as the grammar snob. He has recently joined the ranks of the HB parent community now that his eldest has joined the fifth grade. He wears lots of hats in the school mostly because he keeps saying yes to things. He has lots of thoughts about the mass media, popular culture and writing.

Carl Hoffman, longtime Upper School History teacher, continues to feel amazed by the changes he has seen at Hathaway Brown over almost three decades. This year, he is also facing several of life’s transitions. For one, the departure of both sons, John and Chris (veterans of HB Pre-K in 1992 and 1996, respectively), leaves him and wife Kathy (former HB Upper School librarian) facing the role of empty nesters. Carl is also excitedly anticipating a totally-revamped teaching schedule this year at HB, one in which he will teach US History for the first time since 2002, and introduce a new course, Contemporary American Politics and Society (CAPS) as a capstone to the Global Scholars, Girls’ Leadership, and Multicultural Centers. Finally, he watches with admiration and affection as the class of 2011 enters senior year.

James Allen is the upper school technology department chair and assistant director of the Strnad program. He has been committed to increasing female participation in IT ever since his college days, when he was a founding member of Girls in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (GEECS) at the University of Michigan. When he isn't teaching or fixing computer problems, he enjoys playing bass and acoustic guitar, reading post-apocalyptic fiction, and collecting classic arcade games.

Glenn Looman has been on the faculty at Hathaway Brown for twenty-four years and is celebrating his fortieth year of teaching this year. He did his undergraduate work at Hope College where he majored in biology. He holds a M.A.T. from Oberlin College and a Ph.D. from Cleveland State University. His doctoral specialization is in learning and development. Glenn has taught Middle School mathematics for almost thirty years and served as HB’s Middle School Math Department Chair for the past five years. He is also involved in First Lego League as a coach for the 6th and 7th grade robotics team. When he is not at school you will find him reading, gardening, or kayaking .
