The Primary School World Languages Department begins to prepare girls for life in a global society, where speaking many languages is a fundamental asset. Teachers operate on the belief that all children can learn multiple languages.
Language acquisition in the Primary School happens through methods that replicate the natural way children learn a language, including immersion in the target language and a focus on listening and speaking skills. Students learn to converse and communicate meaning in the target language from an early age.
Because language is embedded in culture, students are exposed to a variety of cultural contexts and given opportunities to grow in understanding themselves and others. Teachers use media and methods to reach every learner, such as authentic music, dance, literature, games and celebrations from cultures where the target language is spoken.
Whenever appropriate, language teachers integrate classroom material with that of the grade level classroom in order to complement and reinforce learning.
