HBTI MISSION

Hathaway Brown Theatre Institute (HBTI) is committed to helping young people improve their skills in the performing arts through immersion in a challenging curriculum of drama, dance, music and/or design and the opportunity to participate in fully staged productions.

Along with their growing arts skills and appreciation for the arts in general, our students will gain confidence and socialization skills that will benefit them in their eventual field of pursuit in the world at large.

LOCATION

HBTI’s summer training is located at Hathaway Brown School, 19600 North Park Boulevard, Shaker Heights, Ohio 44122.

THE PROGRAM

Performance Arts Training

"AWESOME staff, audition technique class, acting/scene study and dance classes! HBTI brings together the area’s best directors and aspiring young performers."-Klara Hrick

Mondays - Fridays, 9:00am - 3:45pm

Grades 5 - College

Each student grade 5 - college will pick a focus - Acting, Dance, Musical Theatre or Design & Technical. There are six total hours of class per day, and forty-five minutes for lunch.  Each focus has required classes, and some allow for electives. Students will be divided into appropriate classes based on age and experience.

Acting Focus

The goal of the “Acting Focus” is to learn to "live truthfully within imaginary circumstances."HBTI has a multi-level approach to acting training - imagination, action and characterization. Each level offers new techniques that help students rediscover their imagination, open their senses and develop their physical instrument.

Dance Focus

The goal of the “Dance Focus” is to develop a broad movement repertoire. Students will be able to physically and intellectually demonstrate their mastery of dance technique, movement vocabulary and dance terminology.

Musical Theatre Focus

The “Musical Theatre Focus” is designed to develop students in three artistic disciplines - acting, dance and voice - the “triple threat performer.”  Students will learn the same principles as described in the "acting" and "dance" focus with the addition of training in music and voice.

Students will be placed in a series of courses in all three disciplines to move their skills forward and help them grow artistically.

Design / Technical Focus

The goal of the “Design / Technical Focus” is to develop a broad understanding of the arts and sciences of theatre design and technical elements - set, lighting, costume, props and sound. Students will also gain practical experience in executing these elements for HBTIproductions, learning some of the following skills - stage management, carpentry, painting, sewing, lighting hang/focus/gel, prop building & sound selection/editing/setup. Additionally, students will participate on crew for HBTI production(s). Offered first session only.
