Welcome to the Primary School!
The Primary School is a magical place to spend your childhood. Among the best things in the Primary School are the wonderful students, strong academic program, experienced faculty, and involved parents. Our goals as a community keep the girls' social development and educational journey at the forefront of everything we do.
Our world-class Primary School faculty and staff provide each girl with extraordinary opportunities for academic, artistic and civic achievements. Our students are taught to be engaged, inquisitive participants in their own education. Integration of curriculum throughout each day and across subject areas teaches students valuable skills encouraging them to make connections and flourish from insights gained during academic pursuits.
Working to develop the whole child means the academic program must be balanced with the social-emotional growth of each student. We gather as a Primary School community for assemblies where we share curriculum and accomplishments. All Primary students have a Book Buddy who shares not just books but life in the Primary School. Buddies often help each other with special projects and are sometimes seated next to each other for lunch. Each day girls eat lunch together and over the course of the year rotate tables, getting to know all of the girls in the Prime. Opportunities to participate in service to others and care of individuals are integrated throughout the Prime years as students build empathy and compassion.
Learning to be a kind and considerate person is valued in the Primary School. We spend time each day talking about the “3 R’s” – respect, responsibility and resilience. Our expectation is that girls will show high regard for themselves and others by listening to each other, working peacefully for a common good and treating each other as they would want to be treated. At a girls' school, an emphasis on positive female role models fosters an environment in which a girl's self-esteem and confidence in her own potential for success take center stage. HB girls find countless opportunities for leadership that help them prepare for a competitive yet collaborative society.
The Hathaway Brown philosophy is part of the Primary School culture:
- Hathaway Brown School strives to create an atmosphere of caring: care for individual differences, care for personal and moral development, and care for precision and high standards. The ultimate goal of the faculty is to teach their students not what to think, but how to learn. Instructors, therefore, teach broad basic skills so that students may learn to think interpretively and critically.
- The School values its diverse student body reflective of the pluralism of our American culture. In addition to providing the strongest possible academic training, Hathaway Brown remains dedicated to helping young women achieve the abilities and personal qualities that will prepare them for a rewarding and productive life: confidence, independence of thought and actions, curiosity and vision, social conscience, and the acceptance of challenge.
We encourage you to browse the website to discover all that will be available to spark your daughter's passion in the HB Primary School.
