Winning goal scored with less than a minute left in regulation
For the third time in school history, the Hathaway Brown Varsity Soccer team has won OHSAA's Division II state championship. The exciting matchup between the Blazers and the Bexley High School Lady Lions at Columbus Crew Stadium ended 2-1.
It was a game about the first and final minutes. Only 58 seconds after the opening kick, Bexley scored its first and only goal. It was answered in the first half with a header by Lani Smith '10, one of the few seniors on the Blazer roster.
Solid play on the defensive line by team co-captain Shelby Jahnke '10 and goalie Grace Redmon '11 held the Lady Lions scoreless for the remainder of the game.
With the clock ticking down, a corner kick by Kylie Kaufman '11 resulted in a header off the crossbar by Ingrid Zippe '13. The ball was rebounded by freshman Lysette Roman, who headed the ball in to score with only 52 seconds remaining.
HB ends the season with a record of 17-2-3. This is the third state championship for head coach Dennis Weyn, who also coached the Blazers to the title in 2004 and 2007.
