KEVIN PURPURA NAMED NEW HEAD VARSITY LACROSSE COACH

Hathaway Brown School is pleased to announce that Kevin Purpura has been named Head Varsity Lacrosse Coach.

Purpura began coaching lacrosse in 1990 as a student teacher at Upper Arlington High School. He immediately fell in love with the game and continued coaching lacrosse when he secured his first full time teaching position later in 1990. At Wellington School in Upper Arlington, Purpura taught Modern World History, AP United States History and American Government. He also became the Assistant Varsity Lacrosse Coach, going on to become the Head Varsity Coach during the 1992 season. While at Wellington, Purpura also coached girls and boys basketball.

Unable to coach lacrosse while he taught history in the Republic of Singapore for two years, (lacrosse was not played there), Purpura continued to coach basketball from 1994-1996.

Upon returning to the United States in 1996, Purpura took a job teaching history at Darlington School in Rome, Georgia, where he also served as a baseball coach. He ultimately stopped coaching baseball in order to become the founding Head Lacrosse Coach in 1999. Purpura maintained this role until he left Darlington for Hathaway Brown in 2001.

Purpura continued to teach AP US History at HB and ultimately taught additional courses, including AP World History and Economic Policy, directed HB's summer programs for nine years, and served as the Upper School History Department Chair for seven years. Purpura continues to teach AP US History, AP World History, and Economic Policy today, and now directs the school's Center for Business and Finance.

Although other responsibilities took him away from the field from time to time, Purpura has coached lacrosse at all levels while at Hathaway Brown. He served as the Middle School Assistant Coach, the Middle School Head Coach, the Head Junior Varsity Coach, the Assistant Varsity Coach, and also as the Interim Head Varsity Coach in 2006, a year in which Purpura coached the Blazers to the Midwest Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association championship and also to their first regional championship in school history.
