UPPER SCHOOL - Volume 2, Number 1

CROSS COUNTRY

The Varsity Cross Country team had their first Invitational this past Saturday (8/24/13) as they took part in the Berkshire Early Bird Invitational.  The team finished a very respectable 11th place out of 22 teams in the race with 351 points.  This year's team has 20 members which is a significant increase from last season's roster.  Captains this season are Cristina Gurney '14, Amanda Keresztesy '14 & Susie Min '14.

Next Meet:  Saturday, August 31st - Chris Green Invitational @ Osborne Park (Huron, OH) - 9:30am

FIELD HOCKEY

The Varsity Field Hockey team defeated Orange last week by a score of 8-0 to begin the season.  The team is led by first year Head Coach Abby Taylor (an HB graduate) as well as Assistant Coach Jen Tramer.  Emily Fletcher '14, Emma Nook '14, Elana Scott '15 & Melissa Stefanski '14 are the captains of a team that will feature many new faces on the field as they look to continue their winning tradition.

The Junior Varsity Field Hockey team defeated Granville by a score of 2-0 to begin their season last week.  They are led by first year Head Coach Brooke Edwards and Assistant Coach Kaitlyn Mestelske.

Next Game:  Tuesday, September 3rd @ Hudson - Varsity @ 4:30pm/JV @ 6pm

GOLF

The Varsity Golf team has been in full swing since the early part of August.  With a team comprised of 8 members, they have started the season with several very respectable finishes in some early season tournaments.  The team currently has a match record of 3-1.  Captains this season are Amanda Bingaman '15 & Sydney Smith '14.  Over this past weekend, the team finished in a tie for 5th place in the Ohio Division of the Midwest Girls Golf Classic at Skyland Pines GC with a team score of 370.

This Week's Tournaments/Matches:  Monday, August 26th - Walsh Jesuit Invitational @ Prestwick Country Club - 12pm; Thursday, August 29th Vs. Laurel School (NEOISGGL) & Padua Franciscan (NEOISGGL) @ Manakiki Golf Course - 3:30pm

SOCCER

The Varsity Soccer team has begun the season with a 0-1-1 record.  Again playing a very tough schedule, the Blazers fell to Walsh Jesuit by a 5-0 score last week, and then rebounded to tie Notre Dame Academy (Toledo) by a 1-1 count on Saturday.  The team captains this season are Claire Danes '14 and Melissa Vajskop '14. 

The Junior Varsity team fell in their first two games by scores of 7-1 & 5-0.

New faces on the sidelines this season are Assistant Varsity Coach John Kissner & Assistant Junior Varsity Coach Maddie Daskovsky.

TENNIS

The Varsity "A" Tennis team has begun the season with a 2-2 match record.  They were defeated by Upper Arlington & Bishop Watterson.  The team defeated Westlake and then won their First Round OTCA Match Vs. Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy by a 5-0 score.  They have also played in two Doubles Tournaments early this season.  The team is captained by Sarah Adler '14 & Katie Kleinman '14..

The Varsity "B" Tennis team has started the season 0-3 with losses to Upper Arlington, Magnificat & Hawken School.  Captains are Fallon Gallagher '14 & Diana Muha '15.

The JV Tennis team has begun the season with a loss to Upper Arlington and a victory over Shaker Heights.

Cleveland Heights - 4:30pm; Wednesday, August 28th - JV Vs. Hawken School - 4:30pm; Thursday, August 29th - Varsity "A" Vs. Walsh Jesuit - 4:30pm, Varsity "B" @ Aurora - 4:30pm & JV Tennis Vs. Aurora @ Ursuline College - 4:45pm

VOLLEYBALL

The Varsity Volleyball team has started the season with a win over Canton McKinley in 4 games and a loss to Archbishop Hoban in 5 games.  The team looks forward to a promising season with CeCe Barrett '14 & Kayla Musso '14 as team captains.

The JV team is young and learning.  They have begun the season with two losses.

CREW:  Anyone interested in pursuing Crew - the Cleveland Youth Rowing Association (CYRA) will hold tryouts for girls grades 9-12 on Thursday, August 29th & Friday, August 30th from 6pm-7:45pm.  Please register at www.cyrarowing.org if you are interested.
