10.1.15: Kids 2 Kids: An interview with the kids of the Black Lantern Restaurant

"In 2012, my parents were celebrating the anniversary of their engagement, and us girls decided to make them a special dinner. My mom took us to Heinen's and we shopped for a four-course meal. We made a fun appetizer tray, soup, pasta and dessert. My parents thought it was so magical that every parent in the neighborhood should experience it. So Christina, Kennedy, Sarah and I decided to start a restaurant."


 

10.1.15: A Look at the Akron Public Library Mini Maker Faire

In September I went and visited the Akron Public Library in Ohio to check out its Mini Maker Faire. They had around 60 individuals and groups participate, setting up booths throughout the library. There also several local robotics teams in attendance.

Instead of kicking back and relaxing for her summer vacation, Bath ballerina Anne Lewandowski had the adventure of a lifetime, immersing herself in Russian culture and dancing with the world-renowned Bolshoi Ballet.

During her time at JCU, Meier earned All-OAC status 14 times, won 10 individual OAC Championships, All-American honors three times, and OAC Swimmer of the Year recognition twice.

The Ohio High School Tennis Coaches Association's First Team rankings are out, and Hathaway Brown is the top-ranked girls' team in Division II in Ohio. It's easy to see why. The Blazers have a returning state champ, two returning state runners-up, and a roster full of underclassmen.

Hathaway Brown's Lauren Gillinov successfully defended her Division II singles state championship by defeating Cloverleaf's Emily Dunbar on Saturday in the 2015 OHSAA state girls tennis tournament at Lindner Family Tennis Center. ... While Gillinov was playing Dunbar in the singles final, Gillinov's teammates, Catherine Areklett and Ally Persky, were playing in the Division II doubles championship match. They fell to Cincinnati Indian Hill's duo of Caroline Andersen and Meredith Breda, 6-3, 6-4.


 

10.19.15: Hathaway Brown girls tennis wins 2015 OTCA Division II state championship

Hathaway Brown's girls tennis team won the 2015 Ohio Tennis Coaches Association Division II team championship on Sunday at Reynoldsburg High School. The Blazers defeated Gahanna Columbus Academy, 3-0, in the semifinals and Cincinnati Indian Hill, 3-0, in the finals.

10.22.15: Hathaway Brown Appoints New Head of School

The Hathaway Brown School Board of Trustees announced Dr. Mary Frances Bisselle as the school’s 14th Head of School beginning July 1, 2016. Bisselle comes to Hathaway Brown armed with an impressive résumé of professional achievements, an outstanding and proven track record of innovative leadership, and an undeniable passion for girls’ education.



10.22.15: William and Mary adds relay weapon Motch, versatile Williams

Motch has made multple finals at the NCSA Junior Nationals on the basis of her 50 prowess. Motch was also a finalist in the 50 and 100 freestyle at the Ohio State Division 2 championships for the Hathaway Brown School.

10.23.15: West Shore Chatter: Westlake teen named science competition semifinalist

Hathaway Brown senior Kavya Ravichandran, the daughter of Jayashree Ravichandran and Ravichandran Annaswamy of Westlake, is one of only three Northeast Ohio semifinalists in the prestigious 2015 Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology. Kavya has worked for four years on her research in the Case Western Reserve School of Engineering Department of Biomedical Engineering.

Hathaway Brown senior Olivia Asmar of Chagrin Falls has been named one of three semifinalists from Northeast Ohio in the Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology for their multiyear research projects through the Science Research and Engineering Program.

The debate team from Hathaway Brown School in Shaker Heights has advanced to the "Round of 64" in the IPPF Debate Competition that includes teams from around the globe. Next up for the HB girls is a match against a team from Croatia, and you know what they say about the Croatian debate team.


 

12.7.15: Ohio Lottery Partners in Education Shining Star: Lauren Gillinov

It's now time to honor a student who gets it done in the classroom. And this week, with the help of the Ohio Lottery Partners in Education, we salute Lauren Gillinov. The junior from Hathaway Brown just rocked the ACT. She got a 36, which is a perfect score. 


 

12.10.15: Romona's Kids: NE Ohio student athletes train for games, goodwill

Eighteen northeast Ohio athletes are about to head to the winter games in Austria. The kids, ages 13 to 15, have been training in their sports, getting ready to join 1,200 other kids from all over the world this January in Innsbruck, the site of the 1976 Winter Olympic Games. "You want to make a good imprint on them, represent your country well, and let them know you want to be friends with them," said Kylie Blackburn of Euclid. Marian Searby showed off the items they're taking to trade with other athletes, including American flag socks and headbands, Cavs jerseys, pins and T-shirts. Searby is an Alpine skier who's excited to meet other teens with a similar passion for the sport. "I really want to see all the sights of Innsbruck, taste all the different foods, and see all the different aspects of culture they have in Austria that we don't have here in America," Searby said.

What Dani did last week: The Purdue commit scored 19 points and collected 12 rebounds to go along with two steals and two blocks to win over Akron Hoban. In a loss to Columbus Africentric, Dani scored 16 points, grabbed 22 rebounds and had five blocks and two steals.

Returning from a double-podium finish at the state swim meet, Hathaway Brown senior Mary Motch of Chagrin Falls signed a national letter of intent to continue her career at the Division I level with the Tribe at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
