This month, the East End Neighborhood House presented Hathaway Brown with its prestigious Paul Hill Jr. Community Service Award. The honor was bestowed in acknowledgement of the school's ongoing partnership with this social service organization that provides direct services to individuals and families.

According to the plaque that was presented to a group of HB students on February 7, the Paul Hill Jr. Community Service Award is given annually in recognition of nonprofit service providers "who have committed to partnering with East End Neighborhood House on behalf of its mission and services to the community. We can call on this organziation or individual at any time and know that they are willing to make a difference."

For the last several months, young women from HB have traveled after school to the East End Neighborhood House in Shaker Heights, where they've been part of a meaningful Peer Education program. The HB students work with students there to discuss issues of health and wellness. The program (recently featured in Currents) also is designed to give students an opportunity to learn from and mentor one another. The Peer Education partnership was created by Stephanie Hiedemann, director of HB's Center for Civic Engagement, and Denise Keary, chair of the Physical Education department.

This is the second time in the last decade that HB has been the recipient of  the Paul Hill Jr. Community Service Award from East End Neighborhood House.

In the last 18 months, the school also has been honored to be named community partner of the year by both International Partners in Mission and Transitional Housing Incorporated. A special program featuring HB students will be presented at a benefit for THI on March 1 at Old Stone Church in Cleveland. Click here for details.
