Hathaway Brown junior Vanessa Smith, a standout player on the Blazers' three-time defending state champion basketball team, was named Player of the Week for January 13 in The Plain Dealer. 

A three-year member of the team, Smith was praised by the paper's sportswriters for her performance in recent games against Lake Catholic and Toledo Notre Dame Academy. In the Lake Catholic game, she had 13 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks. When the Blazers faced Notre Dame Academy, Smith had 24 points, five rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.
