Peter Bonnell will offer tips for maximizing your Social Security benefits Tuesday at the Shaker library.

SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio –- Meet candidates in the Cuyahoga County Council 9th District race at 7 p.m. Thursday at Shaker Middle School, 20600 Shaker Blvd.

Candidates include Bedford Heights City Councilman Lloyd Anderson, Warrensville Heights City Councilwoman Shontel Brown, Highland Hills City Councilwoman Leah Lewis, former Shaker Heights City Councilwoman Lynn Ruffner and Bedford City Councilman Donald Saunders. Candidates Adam Trumbo, son of retired Ohio Court of Appeals Judge Sara J. Harper, and Andre White, a political consultant who lives in Cleveland's Lee-Harvard neighborhood, will also be there.

Trumbo is the only Republican in the race. The others, all Democrats, will be on the ballot in the May primary. They hope to replace County Councilwoman C. Ellen Connally when she retires.

The 9th District includes Bedford, Bedford Heights, Highland Hills, North Randall, Orange, Pepper Pike, Shaker Heights, Warrensville Heights and Woodmere, as well as parts of Cleveland's first and fourth wards.

Shaker Heights League of Women Voters, Shaker Historical Society and Shaker Heights Public Library have teamed up to sponsor the forum.

Financial expert to present tips for maximizing social security benefits

Learn how to maximize your Social Security benefits at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Shaker library, 16500 Van Aken Blvd.

Peter Bonnell, a senior vice president with Right Course Wealth Management, will present planning tips to maximize your social security benefits while reducing or eliminating taxes on them.

Bonnell conducts financial workshops for the Institute for Financial Awareness, a national non-profit organization that promotes financial education.

Hathaway Brown debate team advances to Elite 8

Hathaway Brown's International Public Policy Forum team of Nitya Thakore, Aarathi Sahadevan  and Debolina Ghosh  has made it to the Elite 8 in international competition after a 2-1 decision over Lamar High School from Houston, Texas. HB is one of three schools in the world and one of only two in the United States to make the top eight in the international competition in back-to-back years.

The team will travel to travel to New York City on Friday for a three-day competition. The debate will be broadcast live at www.ippfdeabte.com beginning at 10:15 a.m. Saturday. The HB team will go head-to-head with Taipai American School from Taiwan. HB will continue to debate both sides of the resolution, "Resolved: As a last resort, unilateral military force is justified to minimize nuclear weapons proliferation."

IPPF is an international competition of written debate sponsored by the Bickel and Brewer law firm and New York University. Teams from 34 states and 29 countries wrote preliminary round essays to qualify.

Thakore, a sophomore, is a resident of Pepper Pike. Sophomore Sahadevan lives in Beachwood, and freshman Ghosh lives in Solon.
