HB figure skaters are blazing on ice

Last weekend, five skaters represented Hathaway Brown at the first-ever High School Final competition, a national event sanctioned by the U.S. Figure Skating Association. The program was held in Strongsville, Ohio, and skaters from several states came together to showcase their skills and compete for both individual and team titles.

Cristina Rackley '18 won gold medals for her performances in both the Junior Ladies short program and Junior Ladies Championship. She captivated all those who had the pleasure of watching her skate with her grace and impressive repertoire of athletic jumps, spins and connecting steps, including a difficult double-axel jump.

Leonela Serrano '18 skated a beautiful Preliminary Freestyle program and displayed new levels of confidence, poise, and presentation - characteristics that she exudes both on and off the ice.

Alyssa Jhirad '18, Erica Kahn '18, Maddie Fresco '18, and Leonela Serrano '18 represented Hathaway Brown in Team Maneuvers, an event that showcases the collective team’s strongest jumps, spins, and moves in the field. The team, coached by HB Middle School Spanish teacher Maya Edwards, placed third overall, earning bronze medals.

Congratulations also go to team members Alex Deutchman '19, Alyssa Jhirad '18, Erica Kahn '18, Reese Legan '21, Maddie Shade '16, Tina Rackley '18, Leonela Serrano '18, and Sarinna Vasavada '18 for their outstanding showings.

In February, eight skaters from the Middle and Upper School represented Hathaway Brown at the Ohio High School Figure Skating Championships. They skated events including compulsory moves, ice dance, team maneuvers, and freestyle programs. For the first time ever, HB skaters earned a first-place finish overall in team maneuvers and several girls additionally brought home medals in their individual events.

Additionally, HB junior Maddie Shade '16 is a member of Mentor Figure Skating Club’s Ice Diamonds Synchronized Skating Intermediate Team. Her team qualified this year for the U.S. Figure Skating National Synchronized Skating Championships held in Rhode Island, and they brought home the bronze medal. Read more here
