AN APPRENTICE TEACHER'S DAY AT ASPIRE

"I’ve learned that good teaching is multi-faceted and involves so much of one’s self that you become the job with your entire being."
– Camille Lipford, Apprentice Teacher from Spelman College, Summer 2006

Lelia Braxton is a junior at Boston University. She is majoring in biology, sings in an a cappella group, and volunteers in a battered women’s shelter.

8:00: Lelia begins her morning by cheering for the students as they arrive at HB, greeting each student by name.

8:10: Morning Meeting: Lelia checks in with her students and makes sure Arienna is feeling ready to make an announcement about the upcoming Aspire Olympics.

8:20: Lelia has been working with her Directing Teacher to develop a new lab that challenges the girls to build the tallest tower possible with one sheet of paper. They agree that this would be great introduction to new problem solving techniques.

9:00: She is pleased with the engagement level of her students while she teaches.

11:00: During a free period, she meets with her Directing Teacher about her class.

12:00: She eats lunch with some of her students.

12:30: While the students are in Activity Period, Lelia consults with the director about a particularly quiet student who concerns her.

1:00: In her music workshop, she decides to teach the girls a new song for the Closing Ceremony.

2:30: Lelia meets with some students briefly before they leave.

3:00: She waves goodbye as the girls leave for home.

3:30: After a short staff meeting, she organizes her lab for the next day and finishes grading papers.  At home she will write feedback to her students in their lab journals.
