DIRECTING TEACHERS
|
|
"As a DT (and practicing teacher) I've found
that the chance to observe, support and advise teachers
who are at the beginning of their "careers" has had
a profound effect on the way I am thinking about my
practice for next year. Aside from getting new ideas
from the lessons the AT's create, I've needed to be
deeply reflective about the "why" of effective teaching
along with the "how" and that reflection is helping
me refine what I'll be doing next year. "
Kim Porter, Directing
Teacher from CMSD, Summers 2004-2006

Description
of the Directing Teaching Position
Directing Teachers develop and teach academic classes
(either in Math, Science, Language Arts or Social Studies)
in partnership with three Apprentice Teachers, who are current
college students. Together the Directing Teachers and the
Apprentice Teachers are responsible for implementing creative,
engaging classes that meet the academic needs of middle school
girls. Directing Teachers help college and high school students
gain an understanding of the many aspects of teaching life--from
organizing innovative activities and identifying quality materials
to understanding adolescents and providing students with useful
feedback. Directing Teachers are available to advise college
students with the planning of their afternoon workshops. They
also are asked to provide specific feedback, both formal and
informal, to Apprentice Teachers in the program.
We would like Aspire Directing Teachers to immerse
themselves in program life and be willing to take on
multiple roles within the program. Directing Teachers play a critical role
in encouraging and in celebrating the successes of the young
teachers & Aspire students. Directing Teachers also work to build strong connections among our diverse group of
students, families, teachers and supporters.
