APPRENTICE TEACHERS
|
|
I have learned that teaching comes from the heart. You have to believe in your students in order for them to learn. Teaching is about creating new ways to inspire students to explore education.
Aspire has taught me this."

Summer 2006

Description of the Apprentice Teaching Position
1.
Teaching an Academic Class Apprentices are
responsible for implementing creative, engaging classes
that support the academic needs of middle school girls.
They plan and teach three sections of an academic class
(either in Math, Science, Language Arts, or Social Studies). Apprentice
Teachers fulfill all responsibilities associated with teaching
classes, including selection of specific activities, class
planning & preparation, and student assessment (including
written comments about student growth). Apprentice
Teachers who teach eighth grade are also involved in the
implementation of weekly half-day leadership seminars for
these students, and therefore have a slightly different
teaching load. The work of Apprentice Teachers is
supported by a team of experienced teachers.
2.
Teaching a Workshop Apprentice Teachers share
their expertise and personal interests in afternoon workshops
of their own design. These workshops broaden the exposure
of our students by covering a wide range of topics not often
covered in middle schools (anything from dance to mock trial).
3.
Related Responsibilities Apprentice Teachers work together to run some Morning Meetings
in order to help set a positive tone and create a widespread
feeling of community at Aspire. They also are involved in
the supervision of some lunch and student choice periods.
4.
Faculty Meetings and Events All Apprentice Teachers are required to attend Teacher Orientation
and Program Evaluation days as these are critical training
and team building periods. Attendance at a few special
events outside of the school day (Parent Night and Closing
Ceremony, for example) is expected. College students
attend regular staff meetings regarding teaching, program
details, and student progress throughout the summer.
Each year, Aspire has received over 120 inquiries about the Apprentice Teaching
position. Students from several of the nation's leading
colleges and universities, including Brown, Columbia, Denison,
Harvard, Middlebury, Northwestern, Princeton, Swarthmore,
and Yale have chosen to teach at Aspire. We encourage
you to consider applying.
